01 / THE STORY

History & context

The Renault T600 B was the second prototype in a pair of experimental compact vehicles developed in 1958 through the collaboration between Renault and Carrozzeria Ghia. Following the earlier T600 A, the T600 B continued the exploration of alternative urban vehicle layouts with a focus on interior space optimization, unconventional design proportions, and novel engineering solutions. Both models reflected a willingness to challenge the established conventions of small car design in postwar Europe. The T600 B retained the cab-forward layout introduced in the T600 A, with the passenger compartment positioned above or slightly ahead of the front axle. This configuration allowed for a more spacious interior in relation to the car’s compact external dimensions. While the T600 A featured a more utilitarian appearance, the B version introduced refinements to the overall silhouette and detailing. The body, again shaped by Ghia, was marked by a clean, rounded form with minimal ornamentation, consistent with the Italian coachbuilder’s aesthetic vocabulary of the late 1950s. Notably, the front end design of the T600 B was altered from the A model, with a revised lighting arrangement and smoother integration of the grille area. The rear of the vehicle also received more attention in terms of surface treatment and curvature, contributing to a more resolved visual identity. The proportions remained unconventional but were softened by these adjustments, offering a more cohesive and stylized profile. Mechanically, the T600 B was built using components from the Renault Dauphine, including the rear-mounted engine. This setup allowed for the distinctive frontal layout, where the absence of a traditional engine bay gave the car its signature short nose and maximized usable cabin volume. The decision to base both T600 prototypes on existing Renault mechanicals reinforced their feasibility as potential production studies. The Renault T600 B remained a design and engineering exercise. It represented a moment in which Renault and Ghia were investigating how compact vehicles could be reconfigured to address emerging urban mobility challenges. With its combination of spatial experimentation and design clarity, the T600 B offered a unique glimpse into a road not taken in postwar automobile development.
