01 / THE STORY

History & context

The Renault Safrane Gandini, developed under the internal code X54, was an early design proposal for Renault’s future flagship sedan. Created in 1984 by Marcello Gandini, the project was part of Renault’s search for a successor to the Renault 25. At the time, Gandini worked as an independent consultant and had already completed several successful projects for Renault, including the Renault 5 Supercinq. The X54 prototype presented a compact, aerodynamic four-door body with proportions that reflected Gandini’s late design language. The exterior featured clean horizontal lines, a low front end, and smooth surfaces designed to reduce drag. The front carried a wide grille with integrated rectangular headlamps and a narrow lower intake. Along the sides, the glasshouse was sharply defined, with minimal overhangs and flush glazing that contributed to the car’s aerodynamic efficiency. The rear design used a continuous black light strip and a tapered profile that emphasized volume control and technical precision. The Renault Safrane Gandini was built as a full-scale model to illustrate an alternative direction for Renault’s executive segment. The design balanced simplicity with aerodynamics, focusing on rational form rather than decorative elements. Inside, Gandini proposed a functional layout based on clear geometry and driver visibility, consistent with Renault’s ergonomic standards. Renault evaluated the Renault X54 concept but ultimately selected an internal design for production, resulting in the Safrane launched in 1992. Gandini’s proposal remained a one-off study, stored within Renault’s design archives. It illustrates the collaboration between Italian design culture and French industrial design during the 1980s. The Renault Safrane Gandini stands as evidence of Marcello Gandini’s methodical approach—technical, analytical, and rooted in aerodynamic logic—applied to a segment far removed from the supercars that made his name.
