01 / THE STORY

History & context

The Porsche 356 Spyder Ghia, unveiled at the 1953 Paris Auto Show, is a notable creation by designer Giovanni Savonuzzi for the renowned Italian coachbuilder Carrozzeria Ghia. This unique two-seater roadster showcased innovative design elements that set it apart from other sports cars of its time. The 356 Spyder Ghia was an experimental prototype that combined the dynamic performance of the Porsche 356 with the striking, distinctive styling that Ghia was known for. One of the most eye-catching features of the car was its four headlights, a bold and unconventional design choice that added to the car’s dramatic presence. The front end also featured a fake grille, further emphasizing the prototype’s distinctive and experimental aesthetic. Despite its striking appearance, the 356 Spyder Ghia was not produced for mass consumption, and only one prototype was ever built. Nevertheless, the car generated a great deal of attention at the Paris Auto Show, highlighting the collaboration between Porsche and Ghia, which was known for pushing the boundaries of automotive design during the 1950s. The Porsche 356 Spyder Ghia remains a rare example of the fusion of high-performance engineering and stylistic innovation. Its design embodied a sense of experimentation that was characteristic of the era, blending cutting-edge technology with bold visual statements. Although it never entered production, the 356 Spyder Ghia left a lasting impression on automotive enthusiasts and designers alike, serving as a testament to the creative possibilities of bespoke car design.
