01 / THE STORY

History & context

The Panhard Dyna Spider (1951) was coachbuilt by Allemano and designed by Giovanni Michelotti. Development of the Dyna Spider occurred during a period characterized by a growing interest in lightweight, efficient vehicles following World War II. The model was based on Panhard’s existing Dyna platform, which emphasized compactness and aerodynamic efficiency, reflecting the industrial design trends of the time. The coachbuilding process utilized aluminum extensively for its lightweight properties, contributing to the Dyna Spider’s performance and handling. The proportions of the vehicle were carefully designed to enhance its sporty appearance while maintaining structural integrity. The construction methods involved both traditional handcrafting and innovative techniques for the era, aligning with the stylistic context of postwar automotive design that favored streamlined shapes and minimalistic aesthetics. Mechanically, the Panhard Dyna Spider was equipped with a flat-twin engine, which was known for its distinctive design and efficient operation. The chassis, by GILCO, was designed to support a rear-engine layout, which provided a unique driving experience and favorable weight distribution. Suspension components were engineered to ensure stability and agility, complementing the vehicle’s lightweight nature.
