01 / THE STORY
History & context
The Maserati Chubasco is a two-seat concept coupé introduced in 1990 and designed by Marcello Gandini. The chassis incorporates a mid-engine layout and is rear-wheel drive. Dimensions are approximately 4,365 mm in length, 2,015 mm in width and 1,125 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2,650 mm. Power is delivered by a 3,217 cc (3.2 L) twin-turbocharged V8 engine, featuring 32 valves and dual overhead camshafts. The unit produces approximately 430 hp at 6,500 rpm, yielding a power-to-weight ratio of about 307 hp per tonne. The curb weight is around 1,400 kg. The transmission is a five-speed manual gearbox, locating the driver within direct mechanical engagement. The suspension system utilises coil springs both front and rear, and ventilated disc brakes are fitted on all four wheels. The drivetrain layout positions the engine centrally and behind the passenger compartment, aiding in mass centralisation and dynamic stability. Aerodynamic development includes integrated air intakes and under-body airflow channels to manage engine cooling and downforce. The bodywork presents sweeping lines and an elongated profile consistent with Gandini’s design philosophy of the early 1990s. Visual cues include pop-up headlamps and pronounced wheel arches. The interior accommodates only two occupants and retains a minimalist layout that underscores its concept status. Although the chassis and powertrain hint at production-level ambition, high manufacturing cost prevented series manufacture. Only a single example was built, and the project did not proceed beyond the prototype stage. The Chubasco remains preserved as a concept vehicle and has been documented through photographs and archival materials.

- Maserati's official history states that Chubasco used a central-backbone chassis concept and the Shamal 3.2-litre twin-turbo V8, but the project stopped at an in-house mock-up. These fields describe the documented proposal, not a completed running production specification.
