01 / THE STORY
History & context
The Maserati 3500 GT Spyder by Frua, chassis number AM101.268, is a singular masterpiece within Maserati’s storied lineagean elegant one-off that bridges design experimentation and the brand’s ambition in the grand touring market. This unique vehicle emerged as part of Maserati’s broader initiative, following the success of the 3500 GT introduced at the 27th Geneva Motor Show in March 1957. The debut of the Tipo 101 marked Maserati’s serious foray into building refined, four-seater road cars with sporting pedigree, aimed at larger-scale production. While most of the 1,973 Touring coupés and 243 Vignale spiders crafted between 1957 and 1965 adhered to standard designs, the Frua Spyder stood apart as a bespoke interpretation. Pietro Frua’s involvement with Maserati culminated in this spider, whose design process began in late summer 1958. Frua produced a 1:10 scale drawing on August 26, followed by a full-scale construction plan on September 2. Final assembly was completed on December 20, 1958, with its mechanical layout built on the established 3.5-liter inline-six producing 220 DIN horsepower, paired to a ZF four-speed gearbox. The body featured a distinctive light yellow finish (giallo chiaro), complemented by a turquoise green and white leather interior and a black convertible top. The vehicle’s visual identityexuberant, modern, and refinedreflected Frua’s technical precision and creative freedom. Though originally rumored to debut at the 1959 Geneva Motor Show, the Frua Spyder ultimately remained absent from the stand. Still, a mention in the Automobil Revue in January 1959 confirmed its existence and anticipated debut. Shortly after, in early January, the car was tested on the Modena track by German journalist Richard von Frankenberg alongside Maserati’s chief test driver Guerino Bertocchi. A formal invoice dated March 23, 1959, valued the car at 2.8 million Italian lire, issued to Maserati’s French importer Jean Thépenier. It was transported to Paris later that month and delivered in April. By November 18, 1959, the Spyder had been registered in Paris to its first owner, M. Duc. Not long after, it appeared on screen in the 1960 film La Française et l’amour, driven by actor Roger Pierre, highlighting its cultural as well as automotive significance. Composer Francis Lopez acquired the car later that year, followed by a succession of French owners throughout the 1960s, including dealers, entrepreneurs, and enthusiasts. The car’s original engine was missing by the 1980s, but a replacement was sourced from Maserati. The Frua body had suffered by then, requiring substantial restoration. In 1988, it came under the care of Peter Garett in the UK, who had the coachwork restored by Glendale Engineering. The car’s configuration was slightly modernized, receiving a five-speed transmission and disc brakes. It changed hands multiple times during the 1990s, moving between France, Belgium, the Netherlands, and eventually the United States. Under Alfredo Brener’s ownership in Houston, Texas, the car underwent another full restoration between 1998 and 2000. It was then shown at the 2000 Concorso Italiano in Carmel and again in 2002 during the presentation of the Maserati 4200 Spyder in Los Angeles. The Frua Spyder began to feature in various publications and auction catalogs, drawing increased attention from collectors. In August 2003, the car was auctioned in Monterey for $106,700. A decade later, in 2013, it was listed for sale in Las Vegas for $2.5 million, eventually climbing to a $3 million asking price by 2014. Photos from this period show it retaining its pastel lemon yellow paint with white tonneau cover and turquoise-white leather interior. By 2017, now featuring a red interior and registered under the UK plate 711 XVP, it was presented again at RM Sotheby’s Monterey auction, fetching $605,000. Its journey continued with participation in events such as the 2018 Colorado Grand, and it underwent further refinement at RM Auto Restoration in Ontario. In 2020, it was offered at RM Sotheby’s online “Shift/Monterey” auction but remained unsold despite a $530,000 bid. Finally, on November 5, 2022, the Frua Spyder was sold once more in London, achieving a price of £488,750.
