01 / THE STORY
History & context
The Lancia Flaminia Sport, making its official debut at the XV Turin Motor Show from November 5 to 16, 1958, stood as a distinguished member of the lineup alongside the sedan, accompanied by other 2-door models crafted by Pininfarina and Touring. Pininfarina’s coupe embodied luxury, accommodating 4 or 5 passengers, while Touring’s version aimed to blend luxury with sportiness. In contrast, Zagato’s creation, true to the Milanese coachbuilder’s spirit, emerged as a pure sports car. The bond between Lancia and Zagato had deepened in recent years, evident from the production of three Lancia Aurelia B20s, tailored for racing, and subsequent experiences with the Appia, starting with the original “Appia-Cammello” in 1956. The pre-series Flaminia Sport (1958) showcased early design nuances, lacking bumper guards and reflecting a body akin to the Appia GTE, characterized by its streamlined profile and distinctive double roof humpsa Zagato signature. These pre-series Flaminia Sports, displayed alongside their production counterparts at the XV Turin Motor Show, revealed technical parallels with the GT Touring, boasting a 119 hp engine and shortened wheelbase, offering enhanced performance with lighter weight. Evolving aesthetics were evident, transitioning from rectangular position lights to larger, round lights in 1959, complementing the car’s refined front end. The transition to modern Dunlop disc brakes, showcased at the XXIX Geneva Motor Show in March 1959, signaled advancements in safety and performance. A significant update arrived in 1959, marking the transition to a new version of the Flaminia Sport after the production of 100 examples. The 1960 edition introduced further refinements, including improved trim and steering enhancements, in line with evolving automotive standards. Notably, the addition of side repeaters for turn signals, mandated by new traffic regulations, underscored the car’s adaptation to changing requirements. The Flaminia Sport exemplified Zagato’s commitment to crafting distinctive sports cars, blending performance with elegance. Its journey from pre-series prototypes to refined production models symbolized the collaborative spirit between Lancia and Zagato, marking a significant chapter in automotive history.
