01 / THE STORY

History & context

The Lancia Aurelia B20 Zagato is a rare and remarkable model, with only three specimens ever built. These cars were constructed on the mechanics of the B20 third series and feature a design closely resembling that of the Fiat 8V Zagato. Intended for competitive use, the project did not involve direct participation from Lancia, the parent company. The first of these B20 Zagato models was completed in May 1953 and registered to the Bocca di Biella company with the license plate VC 30694. This car saw action in racing, driven by the pilot Plinio Bona. Known for its sleek lines and performance capabilities, it demonstrated the potential of Zagato’s design in the competitive arena. The second B20 Zagato was finished in June 1953 and registered with the plate TO 148904. It was owned by Ferdinando Gatta, the brother-in-law of Gianni Lancia. Gatta used the car purely for racing, showcasing its prowess on the track. The competitive use of these models highlights Zagato’s commitment to blending aesthetics with high performance. The third and final Lancia Aurelia B20 Zagato was completed in July 1953 and registered with the plate FI 65868. This car belonged to Arturo Luconi of Prato, further underlining the appeal of this rare model among discerning enthusiasts and racers of the time. Each of these three Lancia Aurelia B20 Zagato models represents a unique piece of automotive history, combining the mechanical excellence of Lancia with the distinctive design and craftsmanship of Zagato. Although Lancia did not directly participate in this project, the cars’ competitive achievements and lasting legacy speak to the innovative spirit and engineering prowess that defined this collaboration. In essence, the Lancia Aurelia B20 Zagato stands as a testament to the synergy between engineering and design, where performance meets beauty, and where each car tells a story of racing heritage and automotive artistry.
