01 / THE STORY

History & context

The Lancia Aurelia B55 chassis B55-1004, produced by Ghia, represents a fascinating chapter in the history of Italian automotive design. In 1954, the Lancia Aurelia transitioned into its “second series,” featuring a robust 2.3-liter engine. This marked the conclusion of chassis production for external coachbuilders under the earlier B52 and B53 designations. However, between 1955 and 1956, Lancia continued to manufacture a limited number of chassis equipped with a slightly larger 2266 cm³ engine, leading to the creation of the B55 and B56 series, defined primarily by their differing axle ratios. The B55 and B56 chassis were unique in that they were primarily intended for “internal use” by Lancia or as the foundation for bespoke creations from prestigious coachbuilders like Pininfarina. Among the special builds, the B55 chassis featured a shortened wheelbase, giving rise to one of the last coupes in the PF200 series. The B56 chassis, on the other hand, was utilized for a luxurious limousine body style, while several other B56 units served as the basis for the elegant “Florida” series bodies. Interestingly, the design language of the B55 coupé shares a striking resemblance with the Aurelia B Junior series, suggesting that the aesthetic direction can be attributed to Gianpaolo Boano. This stylistic connection underscores the cohesive design vision at Ghia during this era, with Boano’s influence evident in the flowing lines and elegant proportions of the vehicle. Of particular note is that Lancia sold two chassis from this limited production run to Ghia, a collaboration that resulted in the creation of two distinct coupes. These Ghia-built vehicles exemplified the artistry and craftsmanship characteristic of mid-20th-century Italian design, blending Lancia’s engineering prowess with Ghia’s innovative styling. The Lancia Aurelia B55-1004, with its exclusive production and unique chassis designation, stands out as a symbol of luxury and bespoke craftsmanship. This vehicle not only showcases the engineering excellence of Lancia but also highlights the creative spirit of the era, where custom coachbuilding flourished, producing automobiles that were as much works of art as they were means of transportation. Today, the B55-1004 is a prized collector’s item, representing a legacy of elegance and innovation in automotive history.
