01 / THE STORY

History & context

The Lancia Aprilia Viotti Aerodinamica (1938) was a competition-oriented special developed on the Lancia Aprilia chassis, bodied by Carrozzeria Viotti and designed by Fabio Luigi Rapi, one of the most influential Italian automotive stylists of the late 1930s. The project was conceived within the context of advanced aerodynamic research applied to endurance competition, reflecting a period in which Italian designers increasingly explored envelope bodies and integrated forms to reduce drag and improve high-speed stability. Rapi’s design replaced the conventional separate fenders of the standard Aprilia with fully integrated mudguards and continuous side volumes. The resulting body featured a compact, unified mass with a low frontal area, emphasizing airflow management rather than decorative elements. The nose was short and rounded, with partially faired headlamps and a narrow vertical grille that maintained visual continuity with Lancia production models. The windshield was steeply raked, and the roofline flowed uninterrupted into a tapered rear section, forming a fastback profile optimized for sustained speed. The side treatment was distinctive, with deeply curved glazing and a teardrop-shaped rear quarter window integrated into the C-pillar, a recurring aerodynamic motif in Rapi’s work of the period. Steel panels were hand-formed over a lightweight structure, balancing rigidity and reduced mass, consistent with Viotti’s competition-focused construction methods. Mechanically, the car retained the Lancia Aprilia’s narrow-angle V4 engine mounted ahead of the passenger compartment. For racing use, the engine was prepared by Pagani, with revisions intended to enhance power delivery, durability, and cooling under continuous high-load conditions. The advanced Aprilia chassis architecture—featuring independent front suspension and Lancia’s sliding-pillar rear arrangement—provided predictable handling and stability on fast public-road circuits. The Aprilia Viotti Aerodinamica achieved a major competition success at the 1938 6 Ore di Pescara, where it secured overall victory driven by the Cantoni–Agosti crew. The demanding Pescara circuit, combining long high-speed straights with technical sections, highlighted the effectiveness of Rapi’s aerodynamic bodywork in maintaining high average speeds and mechanical efficiency over extended distances.
