01 / THE STORY

History & context

The Jaguar XK140 Ghia is a noteworthy example of bespoke automotive design from the mid-20th century. Jaguar supplied a total of eleven XK140 rolling chassis to various independent coachbuilders, with Carrozzeria Ghia of Turin among the most celebrated for their work on these vehicles. Ghia, known for its innovative designs, had previously made a name for itself with the XK120 Supersonic, crafted by Giovanni Savonuzzi. The XK140 Ghia followed in this tradition, representing a blend of British engineering and Italian design flair. The Jaguar XK140 Ghia was built in four distinct specimens, each sharing broadly similar design characteristics. The chassis numbers for these vehicles are S810827DN, S814937DN, S814942, and S815404. These unique models stood out not only for their design but also for their construction. The bodies of the XK140 Ghia were crafted entirely from aluminum, a choice that was typical for hand-built ‘one-off’ cars of the era. This material choice resulted in a significant reduction in weight—approximately 100 kg (220 lbs)—compared to the steel-bodied production XK140s. Ghia’s approach to the XK140 was characterized by its elegant and streamlined design, aligning with the coachbuilder’s reputation for creating stylish and sophisticated automobiles. The XK140 Ghia’s design incorporated elements that reflected both the technical and aesthetic advancements of the time, offering a more exclusive and refined alternative to the standard production models. These bespoke XK140s are now considered rare and valuable collector’s items, representing a unique intersection of British automotive performance and Italian design artistry. Their limited production and distinctive features contribute to their status as significant pieces in the history of luxury and custom automotive design.
