01 / THE STORY
History & context
The Isotta Fraschini 8A Boat-Tail Tourer by Cesare Sala has its genesis with the introduction of the Tipo 8. Launched in 1919, the Tipo 8 was sold as a chassis only, designed to be completed by top-tier coachbuilders. Among the most prominent of these were Italy’s own Castagna and Cesare Sala, although other European and American coachbuilders also contributed their craftsmanship. The Tipo 8A aimed for refinement over sportiness, featuring pushrod-operated overhead valves instead of overhead cams. It was equipped with brakes on all four wheels, enhanced with power assist to ensure superior stopping power. This focus on luxury and performance made the Tipo 8A a symbol of sophistication. Carrozzeria Italiana Cesare Sala, one of Italy’s oldest coachbuilders, played a significant role in the Tipo 8A’s history. The company began as Taramella & C. in the mid-19th century and was one of the first to transition to building motor car bodies, starting with Benz chassis in 1897. Their exceptional craftsmanship caught the attention of the Italian royal family, leading to commissions such as a limousine-landaulet for Queen Margherita on a 24-hp Fiat chassis. Renamed Carrozzeria Italiana Cesare Sala in 1905 after being refinanced by Duke Umberto and other investors, the company became closely associated with Isotta Fraschini during the 1920s. They were a principal client for Isotta Fraschini, clothing many of the Tipo 8 and 8A chassis with their bespoke bodies. The collaboration between Isotta Fraschini and Cesare Sala resulted in some of the most elegant and luxurious vehicles of the era. The Isotta Fraschini 8A Boat-Tail is a prime example, showcasing Sala’s ability to combine luxury with innovative design, creating vehicles that were not only beautiful but also ahead of their time in terms of technology and craftsmanship.
