01 / THE STORY

History & context

The Hillman Hunter Paykan designed by Giovanni Michelotti is a unique and intriguing example of custom automotive design, reflecting the innovation and creativity Michelotti was known for. Built as a running prototype, this one-off coupe was based on the Hillman Hunter Paykan, which was originally produced in Samarkand, Iran. The design was commissioned by an Iranian customer, who, after the car’s completion in Italy, famously drove it back to Iran, creating a fascinating story of an international connection between car design and culture. This distinctive coupe featured a series of bold design choices that set it apart from typical cars of the era. Among the most notable features were the gull-wing doors, a design detail that had already been seen on other Michelotti projects, such as the Lancia Mizar. These wing doors not only offered a striking aesthetic but were also technically advanced, providing greater accessibility and making a dramatic visual statement. Another standout feature was the rear door, which showcased visible glass, further enhancing the car’s futuristic appeal. The car’s exterior was finished in a sleek metallic silver paint, further accentuating its cutting-edge design. The shock-resistant polyurethane bumpers were a practical yet modern addition, reflecting Michelotti’s foresight in incorporating safety features ahead of their time. In addition, the overall technical solutions were progressive for the mid-1970s, with a focus on blending style and functionality in a way that felt ahead of its time. In a beautiful blend of personal experience and passion for car design, the customer was able to pick up his new, custom-made coupe during a holiday in Italy with his wife. The Hillman Hunter Paykan prototype by Michelotti remains a fascinating example of bespoke automotive design, showcasing both technical ingenuity and personal connections that transcend borders.
