01 / THE STORY
History & context
The Ford Saguaro is a rare and forward-thinking SUV concept unveiled at the 1988 Geneva Motor Show. Developed by Ford’s Ghia design studio in Turin, Italy, the Saguaro was conceived as a seven-passenger utility vehicle that combined rugged off-road capabilities with futuristic design and aerodynamic efficiency. The exterior design of the Saguaro stood out with its sleek, modern lines and low-profile silhouette. To improve airflow, it featured flush-mounted glass, recessed door handles, and a steeply raked windshield, resulting in an impressively low drag coefficient of 0.29 a remarkable achievement for an SUV concept of its time. Large 24.8-inch tires mounted on 19.4-inch wheels contributed to its aggressive stance, while high-mounted air intakes positioned near the headlights enhanced engine cooling during off-road use. Measuring 170 inches in length and 67 inches in width, the Saguaro maintained a compact footprint, yet it offered impressive interior space thanks to its intelligent layout. The cabin featured a 2-3-2 seating arrangement, allowing space for up to seven occupants. Both rear seating rows could fold flat to expand the cargo area, offering utility levels similar to a mid-size station wagon. A unique rear liftgate design, wrapping over into the roof, enabled easy loading of large or bulky items. Inside, the Saguaro blended comfort and durability. The ergonomically designed seats were finished in leather and rugged fabric inserts, color-keyed to the exterior’s pearlescent turquoise paint. The cabin layout reflected Ford’s emphasis on driver-centric design, with well-positioned controls and a focus on spaciousness. While the Ford Saguaro never reached production, it remains a noteworthy example of late 1980s concept innovation. Its aerodynamic form, modular seating, and advanced practicality foreshadowed features that would later define modern crossover SUVs.
