01 / THE STORY

History & context

The 1971 Ford Escort Monte Carlo GT represents a singular exercise in post-war European coachbuilding, crafted by Pietro Frua and exhibited publicly for the first time at the 58th Salon de l’Automobile in Paris. Built on the Ford Escort 1300 MkI platform, the Monte Carlo diverged from Frua’s customary practice of working with high-performance or luxury marques, embracing instead the mechanical underpinnings of a widely available compact family car. The prototype employs the standard 1,298 cc Kent inline-four engine, delivering approximately 70 horsepower through a four-speed manual transmission. The drivetrain and suspension remain in line with the standard Escort 1300 specification, emphasizing that the transformation is one of design rather than performance. Visually, the Monte Carlo GT displays proportions and detailing suggestive of a scaled-down Ferrari 330 GTC, echoing Frua’s earlier design vocabulary seen in his work for Maserati, Glas, and AC. The body features restrained, fluid lines and a clean greenhouse, with minimal ornamentation and flush-mounted features. The use of thin pillars, subtle surfacing, and wide glass areas gives the coupe a distinctive presence. The design reflects Frua’s late-period work, blending technical restraint with visual clarity. The car made its public debut at the 58th Salon de l’Automobile in Paris from October 7 to 17, 1971, showcased proudly on the Frua stand. Interestingly, it shared the spotlight with the Maserati Quattroporte “Aga Khan,”  Only one specimen of the Monte Carlo GT was constructed. According to documentation, the car was acquired directly from Frua in 1972 by the wife of a Swiss architect. It remained in Swiss private collections until 2016, passing through three owners. Restoration was undertaken in 2003, which included a repaint from the original brown metallic to a red metallic finish. Since 2018, the car has been part of a private collection focused on Italian coachbuilt automobiles. Articles documenting the vehicle have appeared in Motor Klassik (August 2018) and Autoretro (issue 470, January 2022), reinforcing the car’s reputation as a significant, if little-known, specimen of Frua’s post-industrial design work. No further units were produced, affirming its status as a one-off design study. The 1971 Ford Escort Monte Carlo GT remains a rare convergence of mass-market engineering and bespoke Italian bodywork.
