01 / THE STORY

History & context

The Ford Lynx stands as a unique concept, conceived by Gary Braddock and crafted by Ghia. Unveiled at the 1996 Geneva Motor Show, it represented an endeavor to envision a sports car utilizing the contemporary Ford Fiesta chassis, with certain design cues later influencing the production of the Ford Puma. However, the Ford Lynx deviates from conventional prototypes in several aspects. Notably, the absence of a drivetrain sets it apart. Additionally, the car’s doors remain firmly shut, serving more as a visual spectacle than functional entry points. Marketed as a rolling display vehicle, the Ford Lynx showcases a fiberglass body fashioned by Ghia, perched atop an elongated Fiesta chassis, resplendent in Euro Blue Metallic hue. Distinctive arches traverse from the front cowl to the trunk, delineating the upper edges of the window frames and doubling as a potential track for a retractable roof, albeit the absence of both side windows and a roof itself on the vehicle. Inside, the cabin accommodates seating for four, adorned in gray fabric with intricate patterned inserts, albeit these seats are rendered inaccessible due to the sealed doors. A vintage Ford steering wheel commands attention amidst static metric instrumentation, while a center stack and manual transmission shifter complete the interior ensemble. It bears reiteration that the Ford Lynx eschews any form of engine or transmission, yet it’s ingeniously wired for illumination, with a power setup tailored specifically for display purposes. Despite its non-functional drivetrain and sealed entryways, the Ford Lynx exudes an air of innovation and aesthetic allure, epitomizing the convergence of futuristic design and automotive ingenuity. While the Ford Lynx may not boast the conventional attributes of a road-ready vehicle, its role as a captivating display piece underscores the creative spirit of automotive design and engineering. As a testament to the realm of possibilities within the automotive industry, the Ford Lynx remains a captivating anomaly, bridging the gap between concept and reality with its striking presence and visionary design elements.
