01 / THE STORY

History & context

The Ford Alpe was a concept vehicle developed by Ghia for Ford and unveiled at the 1996 Turin Motor Show. Conceived during a period of expanding interest in multi-purpose vehicles, the Alpe explored the integration of compact urban usability with visual and functional cues associated with off-road vehicles, anticipating emerging crossover market concepts. The Alpe was built on the mechanical platform of the Ford Escort, retaining a front-wheel-drive layout and compact passenger-car underpinnings. This choice positioned the concept firmly within the C-segment while allowing designers to investigate alternative body architectures without departing from established production constraints. Despite its Escort-derived platform, the Alpe departed significantly from conventional hatchback form through its elevated stance and ruggedized visual treatment. Stylistically, the Alpe reflected Ford’s emerging New Edge design language, characterized by angular volumes, intersecting geometric forms, and sharply defined surfaces. The exterior design drew inspiration from motorcycle construction, most notably in the use of visually detached fenders that emphasized wheel articulation and suggested modularity. These elements contributed to a purposeful, utilitarian appearance while maintaining compact overall dimensions suitable for urban environments. The interior incorporated aluminum detailing and exposed structural motifs intended to reinforce a technical, sport-oriented character. The cabin design emphasized durability and modernity rather than luxury, aligning with the concept’s positioning toward younger users and active lifestyles. The overall design philosophy focused on visual robustness combined with everyday practicality rather than dedicated off-road performance.
