01 / THE STORY
History & context
The Fiat 850 Caprera distinguishes itself from the standard model with a distinctive sunroof, an after-market feature that could be installed on both new and older versions by Carrozzeria Caprera. This “elaborata” edition of the Fiat 850 was upgraded with luxury touches both inside and out, including chrome detailing, making it a more refined and stylish version of the popular Fiat model. Carrozzeria Caprera, based in Turin, added these premium elements to appeal to drivers seeking a more upscale experience from their everyday vehicle. Founded in Turin, Carrozzeria Caprera initially focused its efforts on fulfilling orders from Italy’s leading coachbuilders. For several years, its business was based entirely on collaborating with major automotive companies, supplying customizations and additional features. In 1959, Caprera shifted its focus, aiming to establish its own assembly line for independent production. However, this ambitious plan did not yield significant developments, and the company was unable to break into mass production on a large scale. Following this, Carrozzeria Caprera specialized in the production of small to medium-sized commercial vehicles, concentrating its efforts on a more focused market. Despite its limited success in large-scale vehicle production, the Fiat 850 Caprera remains a noteworthy example of the company’s ability to enhance popular models with luxurious, bespoke features. These custom touches have made the Fiat 850 Caprera an attractive option for collectors and enthusiasts who appreciate the blend of classic Fiat engineering with unique design flourishes. Caprera’s approach to customization reflects the Italian tradition of transforming everyday vehicles into something more distinctive and elegant.
