01 / THE STORY

History & context

The Fiat 600 Sabina was a limited-production coupé designed by Giovanni Michelotti and built by Carrozzeria Vignale in 1955. Based on the Fiat 600 chassis, the Sabina was developed as a stylistic exercise exploring elegant coachwork on a compact, mass-produced platform. At least two examples are known to have been built. One of these featured a panoramic transparent roof and was exhibited at the 1955 Concorso d’Eleganza in Rome, held at the Giardini del Pincio. The mechanical basis for the Sabina was the Fiat 600, introduced the same year. It was equipped with a rear-mounted, water-cooled inline four-cylinder engine with a displacement of 633 cubic centimetres. The engine used an overhead valve configuration and produced approximately 21 horsepower at 4,600 rpm. Power was delivered to the rear axle through a four-speed manual transmission. Suspension employed independent front wheels with a transverse leaf spring and semi-trailing arms at the rear with a transverse leaf spring. Hydraulic drum brakes were fitted at all four corners. The bodywork was styled by Giovanni Michelotti and executed by Vignale using aluminium or steel panels, likely formed over a wooden or tubular frame. The coupé design was compact and featured smooth, rounded lines, a low roofline, minimal ornamentation, and a gently tapered tail. The panoramic-roof variant included a large transparent roof section made from acrylic or polycarbonate, integrated into the fixed roof structure. This version was presented at the Rome concours event as an example of forward-looking design in the small-displacement category. Interior arrangements remained close to the Fiat 600 standard, though materials and finishes were upgraded in line with the car’s coachbuilt character. The Sabina was not included in Fiat’s commercial offerings and does not appear in factory catalogues. The exact number built is unknown, though at least two examples have been documented through photographs and event records.
