01 / THE STORY

History & context

The Fiat 600 Ghia prototype, presented in 1959, was a one-off design study executed by Carrozzeria Ghia based on the standard Fiat 600 platform. The prototype retained the original mechanical layout of the production 600, including the rear-mounted, water-cooled, four-cylinder engine and the standard wheelbase, but featured a completely reworked exterior and interior styling. The project reflected Ghia’s exploration of compact luxury in the postwar Italian car market, targeting a clientele that demanded stylistic refinement in small-format vehicles. The body design of the prototype incorporated significant revisions to the original Fiat 600 silhouette. Most notably, the front fascia was redesigned with a split-grille motif integrated into a sculpted front panel that emphasized symmetry and geometric clarity. Headlamps were recessed into mildly faired housings, and chrome trim was applied with restraint, serving to highlight the body lines rather than dominate them. The roof structure was reshaped into a semi-fastback form, transitioning into the rear section with a continuous curve that eliminated the utilitarian aesthetic of the base model. The bumpers were also redesigned with integrated overriders, adding a layer of perceived substance and formality to the compact dimensions of the car. In the cabin, seating and door panel treatments were upgraded from the Fiat standard, with additional padding and upholstery detail. Instrumentation was minimal but presented in a redesigned dash layout. As a prototype, the car was not intended for series production and no further units were built beyond the example shown. The vehicle was photographed at the Ghia facilities in Turin, with the background architecture consistent with the coachbuilder’s premises during the late 1950s. This prototype illustrates Ghia’s design direction at the end of the decade, combining accessible mechanicals with coachbuilt aesthetics. It remains one of several experimental interpretations of Fiat’s utility cars by Italian design houses during the period.
