01 / THE STORY
History & context
The Fiat 600 Berlinetta by Carrozzeria Canta was presented as a one-off prototype at the 1956 Salone dell’Automobile di Torino. Based on the standard Fiat 600 chassis, this coupé featured a completely reworked body designed and built by the small coachbuilder Canta of Turin. The styling departed significantly from the base model, adopting proportions and design elements more typical of larger grand touring cars. The front fascia was dominated by a large, stylized grille and twin round headlamps integrated into the fenders. A distinctive chrome strip extended centrally from the nose over the bonnet to the roof and rear, visually dividing the body and emphasizing symmetry. The two-tone paint scheme enhanced the impression of formality and volume. The overall height of the roof was reduced compared to the standard 600, while the sides were made visually longer with the use of a horizontal crease line running through the door handles and rear fenders. The car retained its compact dimensions, but the use of wire wheels and whitewall tyres, combined with the chrome trim and detailing, gave it a more upscale presentation. At the rear, the design remained restrained, with minimal ornamentation and integrated round tail lights. The interior followed the design language of mid-1950s Italian coachbuilders, with revised upholstery and a simplified dashboard treatment. While the mechanicals were not significantly altered, it is presumed that the car retained the transverse-mounted 633 cc four-cylinder engine of the standard Fiat 600, paired with a four-speed manual transmission. No production followed the prototype. The Berlinetta remained a one-off exercise, likely intended as a demonstration of Canta’s coachbuilding capability rather than a commercial project. As with many post-war Italian carrozzerie, Canta used mainstream chassis to explore alternative forms of bodywork that blended small car platforms with design cues usually reserved for higher-end vehicles. The 600 Berlinetta stands today as a rare example of limited-production design experimentation based on Fiat’s popular rear-engined utility model.
