01 / THE STORY

History & context

The Fiat 508 C/1100 Coloniale E.I.A.R. was a limited production military utility vehicle constructed in 1939 for the Ente Italiano per le Audizioni Radiofoniche (E.I.A.R.), the state broadcasting agency of the Kingdom of Italy. The model was based on the Fiat 508 C, commonly referred to as the Balilla 1100, specifically the Coloniale variant intended for use in overseas territories. The coachwork was executed by Carrozzeria Viotti of Turin. The chassis, designated 508 C Coloniale, featured a front-mounted, water-cooled four-cylinder inline engine of 1,089 cubic centimetres. This overhead valve unit produced approximately 32 metric horsepower. Power was transmitted to the rear axle via a four-speed manual gearbox. The vehicle was equipped with independent front suspension and a live rear axle supported by semi-elliptical leaf springs. Braking was mechanical on all four wheels. Ground clearance was increased and reinforced suspension components were fitted to accommodate the vehicle’s intended operation in rugged terrain. The body constructed by Viotti adopted a utilitarian open-topped torpedo configuration with a folding canvas roof and provision for weather protection. Design features prioritised functionality over stylistic considerations. Equipment and trim were minimal. Large-section tyres and high-mounted mudguards were used to improve mobility on unpaved roads and desert terrain. Two specimens were constructed for the E.I.A.R. and prepared for shipment to Italian East Africa, where they were to support broadcasting and communication operations in the colonial territories. The vehicles were loaded aboard a vessel departing from mainland Italy. During transit, the ship was sunk in the Sicilian Channel. Both vehicles were lost at sea and were never recovered. No surviving examples are known. No chassis or engine serial numbers have been publicly recorded. The limited production and their premature loss have left the Fiat 508 C/1100 Coloniale E.I.A.R. as a scarcely documented chapter in Italian coachbuilt and military vehicle history. The incident illustrates the repurposing of civilian platforms for colonial service during the late interwar period and the logistical vulnerabilities faced by the Italian state in the era immediately preceding the Second World War.
