01 / THE STORY
History & context
The Fiat 2100 En Plein, unveiled by Vignale in 1959 at the Turin Auto Salon, was a striking example of automotive design that blended Italian craftsmanship with American influences. Based on the Fiat 2100 chassis, this sedan was designed by the talented Giovanni Michelotti, who sought to create a more luxurious, stylish version of the standard Fiat 2100. The En Plein was notable for its bold, American-inspired styling, featuring clean, sweeping lines and a robust, imposing front end that exuded a sense of power and elegance. One of the key design elements of the Fiat 2100 En Plein was the extensive use of aluminum in the construction of several body panels, including the hood and trunk. This lightweight material not only gave the car a sleek, polished look but also helped reduce weight, contributing to improved performance and handling. The attention to detail in the bodywork, coupled with the elegant proportions, reflected the high level of craftsmanship that Vignale was known for during this period. Despite its striking design and advanced features, the En Plein was produced in very limited numbers—only about 10 units were built. Today, fewer than five of these rare cars are believed to have survived, making the En Plein an incredibly rare and valuable collector’s item. The car’s combination of Italian design, American styling influences, and innovative materials ensures its place in automotive history as a unique and elegant creation. The Fiat 2100 En Plein stands as a testament to the creative collaboration between Fiat and Vignale, showcasing how Italian design could embrace international trends while maintaining its own distinctive charm. Although only a handful were made, the Fiat 2100 En Plein remains a fascinating example of luxury automotive design from the late 1950s.
