01 / THE STORY
History & context
The Fiat 1900 Coupé by Carrozzeria Balbo was presented at the 1953 Salone dell’Automobile di Torino as a limited-production coachbuilt variant based on the Fiat 1900 sedan platform. The vehicle featured a unique body designed by Giovanni Michelotti and constructed by Balbo, a Turin-based coachbuilder active in the postwar period. This example demonstrated the trend of adapting Fiat’s standard platforms into more exclusive two-door configurations by Italian carrozzerie during the early 1950s. The design of the Balbo Coupé maintained the basic proportions of the factory Fiat 1900, including the front-engine, rear-wheel-drive layout, but introduced a fastback-style roofline and a distinctly shaped front grille composed of a wide mesh pattern flanked by integrated headlamp units. The body displayed modest chrome detailing, with additional trim outlining the wheel arches and lower sills. The side profile was marked by a gradual taper toward the rear, emphasizing aerodynamic considerations typical of the period. The car rode on standard Fiat wheels with chromed hubcaps and whitewall tyres, and the greenhouse featured a relatively upright windshield and thin pillars to maximize visibility. While exact mechanical specifications are not published for this particular coachbuilt example, the donor platform suggests the use of Fiat’s 1,903 cc inline-four engine, producing around 70 horsepower, paired with a four-speed manual gearbox. Suspension and braking components would have remained consistent with the standard production model. Only one example of the Fiat 1900 Coupé by Balbo is documented, and it was not part of a series production run. The vehicle served as a design study or showpiece for the 1953 Turin Auto Show rather than a commercially available model. Its primary relevance lies in its role within the broader landscape of early postwar Italian coachbuilding, illustrating how independent designers such as Michelotti collaborated with lesser-known firms like Balbo to reinterpret mainstream platforms into bespoke creations.
