01 / THE STORY

History & context

The Fiat 1500 Coupé Sport by Carrozzeria Ghia was a one-off coachbuilt model based on the standard Fiat 1500 chassis. The car retained the mechanical layout of the production model, including the front-mounted inline-four engine and rear-wheel-drive configuration, but featured a custom closed two-door body with aerodynamic modifications typical of the late 1940s. The bodywork was characterized by a streamlined fastback profile, with integrated fenders and a sharply descending roofline. The front end was fitted with a distinctive vertical-bar grille and recessed headlamps, with minimal chrome trim used across the body. This particular example was exhibited at the Monte Carlo International Concours d’Elegance, where it received the Grand Prix, indicating recognition for its overall design and execution. The car was built at Ghia’s Turin facility and used standard Fiat running gear without significant technical deviation from the donor model. The construction likely employed hand-formed steel panels over a modified chassis, following common practice among Italian coachbuilders at the time. Visual documentation of the car was used by Ghia in period promotional materials, describing it under the category of “Carrozzeria di lusso e di gran lusso,” positioning it as a high-end variant for special commissions rather than a production model. No evidence of additional units built to this specification is currently known, suggesting that it remained a one-off. The design belongs to the transitional phase between prewar and postwar Italian body styles, showing early signs of the smoother, unified volumes that would define the 1950s.

Multiple 1947 CI event archives strongly corroborate the Fiat 1500 Coupé Sport Ghia identity and concours history. Fedele Bianco authorship and one-off/Units=1 remain primarily internal to the exact route, so Bianco is downgraded documented -> candidate and the count is cleared. NO_AUTO_INHERIT.
