01 / THE STORY

History & context

The Fiat 132 Familiare by Pininfarina is a one-off concept vehicle unveiled in 1972 at the Salone dell’Automobile di Torino. Conceived as a design study, the vehicle was the result of a collaboration between Fiat and Carrozzeria Pininfarina, executed under the direction of Aldo Brovarone. Its purpose was to examine the potential transformation of the Fiat 132 sedan platform into a more versatile estate-bodied variant, integrating utility within the visual language of refined coachbuilt design. The concept retained the mechanical underpinnings of the standard Fiat 132, which included a front-mounted inline-four petrol engine displacing either 1.6 or 1.8 liters. It was mated to a manual transmission, with both four- and five-speed variants used in production sedans of the period. The drivetrain layout remained rear-wheel-drive, and the suspension architecture consisted of MacPherson struts at the front and a live rear axle with coil springs. The technical basis of the car was unchanged; its significance lay in the reformulation of space and form. The exterior of the 132 Familiare extended the proportions of the sedan into a full-length estate format, characterized by a prolonged roofline and increased glazing aft of the C-pillar. The rear featured a large, nearly vertical tailgate, framed by simple vertical lamp clusters, and an expansive loading aperture. The treatment of the side surfaces was restrained, with clean sheetmetal and discreet chrome detailing. The result was a formal coherence rare among utility-bodied vehicles of the time. Internally, the cabin layout was optimized for flexibility. Rear seats were designed to fold flat, transforming the rear compartment into an uninterrupted load space. Seating, trim, and instrumentation followed the Fiat production logic, without indulgent flourishes. The 132 Familiare remained a prototype and was not adopted for production. No confirmed chassis number is publicly documented, and its subsequent fate is unclear. There are no known public exhibitions beyond its original Turin debut, nor is there any widely acknowledged private or institutional ownership. The Fiat 132 Familiare by Pininfarina stands as a discrete but articulate instance of Italian design rationalism applied to practical architecture. It reflects the stylistic ethos of its maker while addressing the perennial tension between elegance and utility.
