01 / THE STORY
History & context
The Fiat 125 Shopping is a unique creation by the lesser-known coachbuilder Poccardi, designed by the renowned Italian stylist Pietro Frua. Unveiled at the 1968 Turin Auto Salon, the model showcased a distinct approach to the popular 125 sedan by transforming it into a three-door station wagon. This unusual version, named Shopping, was aimed at offering a more versatile and practical vehicle while retaining the elegance and style typical of Italian design during that era. The 125 Shopping was presented as a chic and functional alternative to conventional station wagons. Its design was tailored to cater to the needs of urban families or individuals seeking a more stylish and practical car for shopping trips and daily use. The car was designed with the intention to provide a modern, spacious vehicle while maintaining the compact footprint and agility of the original 125. When introduced in 1968, the Shopping was priced at L. 1,500,000—approximately €16,000 in today’s money—placing it as a relatively affordable, yet exclusive, offering. Despite its innovative design and the uniqueness of the model, the Fiat 125 Shopping remained relatively obscure, partly due to its limited production and the niche market it catered to. The creation of the Fiat 125 Shopping by Poccardi and Frua remains a distinctive chapter in automotive history, showcasing how coachbuilders could reinterpret standard models to suit a particular vision or demand. While not widely remembered today, the Fiat 125 Shopping stands out as an interesting and rare example of 1960s Italian automotive design.

- Registro Pietro Frua separates the 1967 Fiat Poccardi 124 Shopping from the 1968 Fiat Poccardi 125 Shopping and lists the latter at the 1968 Turin Salon. Canonical year 1968 retained; isolated 1967 Fiat 125 caption remains lower-weight counter-evidence.
