01 / THE STORY
History & context
The Fiat 1100 TV Stella Filante made a dramatic debut at the 1954 Turin Auto Show, captivating onlookers with its bold, futuristic design and innovative features. A one-off creation, this remarkable car was crafted by Carrozzeria Monviso and designed by the legendary Giovanni Michelotti, who infused it with his signature style of elegance and originality. What set the Fiat 1100 TV Stella Filante apart was its groundbreaking removable Plexiglas roof, a stark contrast to the conventional sheet metal pavilions of the time. The Plexiglas roof, secured with aeronautical hooks, not only provided a unique visual appeal but also demonstrated a forward-thinking approach to automotive design, offering an open-air driving experience that was ahead of its time. This unique design choice, along with the sleek, aerodynamic lines of the car, made it stand out as a symbol of innovation and advanced thinking in the automotive world. The Fiat 1100 TV Stella Filante’s appearance at the Turin Auto Show created quite a stir, as it was unlike any other vehicle on display. Michelotti’s design was as much about aesthetics as it was about pushing the boundaries of what was possible in car manufacturing, blending form with function in a way that was both beautiful and practical. As a one-off prototype, the Fiat 1100 TV Stella Filante never made it to production. However, it remains an iconic example of mid-century automotive design and is remembered for its bold features, particularly the pioneering use of Plexiglas in a production car, and its place in automotive history as an avant-garde masterpiece from one of Italy’s finest designers.
