01 / THE STORY
History & context
The Fiat 1100 TV Coupé by Carrozzeria Canta, introduced in 1954, was a limited-production coachbuilt model derived from the Fiat 1100 Turismo Veloce platform. The car emerged as a restyled evolution of an earlier version that had attracted attention for its strong resemblance to the American Studebaker Champion. That similarity raised potential legal issues, prompting Carrozzeria Canta and designer Giovanni Michelotti to revise the bodywork within the same year, giving the model a more independent and distinct appearance. The revised coupé retained the fastback configuration of its predecessor but adopted a new frontal design. The grille was simplified into a horizontal opening with a central bar, eliminating the overt American influence while maintaining modern proportions consistent with mid-1950s trends. The bonnet retained its functional scoop, and the overall profile remained compact, with smooth flanks and a balanced roofline. The design demonstrated Michelotti’s early approach to reconciling Italian craftsmanship with international styling tendencies, while ensuring sufficient differentiation from foreign models. Mechanically, the car followed the specifications of the Fiat 1100 Turismo Veloce. It was equipped with a 1,089 cc inline four-cylinder engine with overhead valves, producing approximately 50 horsepower. The power unit was paired with a four-speed manual gearbox, transmitting drive to the rear axle. The chassis was a conventional steel structure, employing independent front suspension with transverse leaf spring and a live rear axle on semi-elliptical leaf springs. Braking was provided by drums on all four wheels. In certain cases, Canta also bodied examples on the larger Fiat 1400 chassis, although the majority were based on the 1100 TV. Production of the Fiat 1100 TV Canta coupé was very limited. Exact figures are not documented, but estimates suggest only a handful of examples were constructed. Surviving cars are rarely identified by chassis number, and ownership records are fragmentary, reflecting the artisanal nature of Canta’s work during this period. The model was displayed at national motor salons in 1954, where it was recognized as a revised solution that addressed the controversy surrounding the first iteration.
