01 / THE STORY

History & context

The Fiat 1100 Giardinetta Sleeping is an Italian gem, akin to the American Chevy Nomad, but with a distinctive flair as a two-door station wagon. Crafted by Carrozzeria Viotti and envisioned by the renowned Giovanni Michelotti, this car found significant success, especially in the era of growing baby-boomer families. As a two-door station wagon, the Fiat 1100 Giardinetta Sleeping mirrored the practicality of its American counterpart, offering an ideal transportation solution for larger families. Despite its utilitarian nature, this vehicle was far from an ordinary car – it was a symbol of refinement and sophistication. Viotti’s craftsmanship and Michelotti’s design elevated it to a level beyond the stock Fiat 1100 upon which it was based. While the  Giardinetta Sleeping catered to the needs of growing families, it was not a budget-friendly option. The car’s few but impactful refinements set it apart, placing it on a higher tier in terms of both style and functionality. Viotti, renowned for its station wagons, adopted the “Sleeping” mark to signify models equipped with reclining seats, adding an extra touch of luxury and comfort to an already distinguished vehicle. In the automotive landscape of its time, the Fiat 1100 Giardinetta Sleeping stood out as a stylish and practical choice, combining Italian design finesse with functional utility. The previous version was designed by Mario Revelli di Beaumont. Today, it remains a nostalgic symbol of an era where family cars seamlessly blended convenience and elegance.
