01 / THE STORY
The Fiat 1100 BL Cabriolet was a one-off open car built by Carrozzeria Balbo in 1948 on Fiat 1100 mechanicals, with the design associated with Giovanni Michelotti’s documented work for Balbo in the immediate post-war period. The surviving historical record identifies it as a distinct coachbuilt event car rather than a generic member of the standard Fiat 1100 range. The “BL” designation appears in the established vehicle history, although the Archivio Storico Michelotti independently documents the broader Balbo Fiat 1100/B Cabriolet programme rather than this exact subtype. The car’s public history is tied to the Italian concours circuit of the late 1940s. Period-derived documentation records appearances in Rome at the Pincio and at the Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este in 1949, a year after the car’s stated construction date. These references concern the same one-off vehicle identity even though an exact chassis number has not yet been recovered. Historical cataloguing also describes the car as an award winner, but the specific prize remains to be reinforced by an event-level source. Balbo was responsible for the coachwork, while Michelotti’s authorship is documented for the Fiat 1100/B Cabriolet work carried out by the Turin coachbuilder. The body is an open cabriolet built around the compact proportions of the Fiat 1100 base. Its exact mechanical specification should not be reconstructed automatically from standard-production 1100 data, since special-bodied cars could differ in weight, equipment and detail. The absence of a published chassis number does not change the nature of the surviving evidence: the history describes one physical coachbuilt car, produced in 1948 and exhibited at important Italian concours the following year. Its production status is therefore one-off, while the BL nomenclature and precise award history remain qualified where the available documentation is less explicit.
