01 / THE STORY

History & context

The Ferrari 365 P Berlinetta Speciale, a concept car built in 1966 by Pininfarina based on a design by Aldo Brovarone, is notable for its unique coupé configuration with three front seats, with the driver positioned centrally. This innovative seating arrangement was later adopted by the McLaren F1, highlighting its forward-thinking design. The car’s mechanics were partly derived from the Ferrari 365 P2, a racing car from the same era, ensuring high performance and racing pedigree. Unveiled at the 1966 Paris Motor Show as a “dream car,” the Ferrari 365 P Berlinetta Speciale captured the imagination of car enthusiasts with its futuristic design and advanced features. The following year, a second model was commissioned by Gianni Agnelli, adding to the car’s exclusivity and allure. Agnelli, a prominent industrialist and head of Fiat, was known for his appreciation of fine automobiles, and his commissioning of this model underscored its significance. The Ferrari 365 P Berlinetta Speciale’s design elements influenced subsequent Ferrari models, particularly the Ferrari Dino 206 GTs and 246 GTs. Its sleek lines, elegant curves, and distinctive features set a design precedent that would be echoed in these later models. The Berlinetta Speciale’s impact on Ferrari’s design language highlights its importance in the marque’s history. With its combination of innovative seating, advanced mechanics, and influential design, the Ferrari 365 P Berlinetta Speciale stands out as a remarkable example of mid-1960s automotive ingenuity. Its legacy is reflected in both its direct influence on later Ferrari models and its enduring appeal as a visionary concept car.
