01 / THE STORY

History & context

The Ferrari 365 GTB/4 NART Spider Competizione stands as a rare and iconic symbol within the Ferrari lineage, boasting a remarkable journey across some of the most legendary racing circuits in the world. Developed and designed by Michelotti in 1975, this particular car holds a distinguished place in Ferrari history, having graced prestigious events such as the Geneva Motor Show, the 24 Hours of Le Mans, and the 24 Hours of Daytona. Campaigned by Luigi Chinetti’s North American Racing Team (NART), it carries a legacy intertwined with motorsport greatness. Among its siblings, four 365 GTB/4 Spiders were transformed by Michelotti for NART, each possessing its own unique attributes. However, chassis no. 15965, presented in 1975, stands out as the most captivating. Originally a European-delivery 1972 Ferrari 365 GTB/4 Daytona, this car was meticulously modified to meet the rigorous demands of competitive racing, while still maintaining elements of luxury, including air conditioning. Chinetti’s vision for this car was clear: to conquer Le Mans, a feat last achieved by Ferrari in 1965. Equipped with a rollbar and Targa top for structural reinforcement, chassis no. 15965 embodied the essence of a dual-purpose Ferrari racer. Following its debut at the Geneva Motor Show in 1975, where it captivated audiences with its striking red, white, and blue livery, the car underwent further preparation for Le Mans. Its original engine was replaced with a competition-spec Group IV Daytona engine, enhancing its performance capabilities for the grueling endurance race. With its high-lift camshafts, racing headers, and side-mounted exhausts, the car was primed for success on the track. This engine, previously piloted to a remarkable 6th overall and 2nd in class at the 1972 24 Hours of Le Mans, ensured that chassis no. 15965 was ready to tackle the challenges of one of motorsport’s most iconic events. The Ferrari 365 GTB/4 NART Spider Competizione represents the epitome of racing heritage, embodying the spirit of competition and the pursuit of excellence that defines the Ferrari legacy.
