01 / THE STORY
History & context
This Ferrari 330 GT Michelotti Coupé began life as a rolling chassis supplied directly by Ferrari and later entrusted to Studio Michelotti for complete coachwork. The result was a fully bespoke, one-off automobile—created at a time when traditional coachbuilding was rapidly disappearing, yet still valued by a select group of discerning clients. A key figure behind the project was Luigi Chinetti, Ferrari’s North American importer and founder of NART. A Le Mans winner in 1949, Chinetti persuaded Enzo Ferrari to allow limited departures from standard production to satisfy North American tastes. These cars became known as Chinetti Specials. Chassis 9083 was originally a 2+2 Ferrari 330 GT platform, transformed by Michelotti into a two-seat coupé with unique bodywork, while retaining the standard 330 GT mechanicals. When that Ferrari was not completed in time for the Geneva Motor Show, Michelotti adapted a very similar design for the Maniero 4700 GT—closely related in proportion and intent, but with a distinctly different side view, giving the Maniero its own identity despite the shared design lineage. At Chinetti’s request, Michelotti also designed a spider variant of the same design, configured as a 2+2. Since completion, the car has had only three owners. In 1987, Rob Drew commissioned a meticulous two-year restoration, during which the original metallic blue finish was changed to its current burgundy. The car appeared at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance in 1989, where it was awarded second place.
