01 / THE STORY

History & context

The Ferrari 212 Inter Vignale #0205EL is a notable example of the intricate and evolving history of Ferrari’s bespoke vehicles. Originally constructed in 1952 with a Ghia Cabriolet body, this particular Ferrari was initially commissioned for Italian actress Vivi Gioi, adding a touch of glamour to its history. The car’s story took a significant turn in the late 1950s when its body was modified. By the 1960s, the original Ghia Cabriolet body had been removed from the chassis, marking the beginning of its transformation journey. During the early 1950s, the body was repurposed and mounted on a Ferrari 340 America, chassis #0196A, effectively replacing its original Vignale Spyder body. The swap of bodies between these iconic Ferraris underscores the fluid nature of vintage car restorations and modifications. The Vignale Spyder body originally fitted to chassis #0196A was reinstalled on the car in 2001, illustrating the ongoing reverence for Ferrari’s historical designs. In a fascinating twist, the Ghia Cabriolet body, previously mounted on the Ferrari 340 America, was restored and reattached to its original chassis #0205EL in 2006 by DK Engineering. This meticulous restoration work not only returned the car to its original configuration but also honored its rich history and previous adaptations. The Ferrari 212 Inter Vignale #0205EL thus stands as a testament to the dynamic life of classic cars, reflecting both their role in the glamorous world of mid-20th-century motoring and the ongoing efforts to preserve their historical integrity.
