01 / THE STORY

History & context

The Dual-Ghia L6.4 Coupé epitomizes an era of American luxury with a touch of Italian flair. In 1962, a slogan emerged, “Luxury that Moves with you,” encapsulating the essence of this unconventional yet captivating automobile. Born from the esteemed lineage of Chrysler-based Italian creations, the Ghia L6.4 made its debut at the 1962 Paris Motor Show, captivating enthusiasts with its blend of flamboyance and refinement. Although badged strictly as a Ghia, the L6.4 was a testament to the enduring collaboration between Chrysler’s visionary Virgil Exner and Ghia’s masterful Luigi Segre. It followed the footsteps of the Dual-Ghia project, albeit with a Chrysler heart and Italian soul. Exuding elegance and sophistication, the L6.4 seamlessly integrated Exner’s extravagant design cues with Ghia’s impeccable craftsmanship. The body of the L6.4 was a study in striking proportions and delicate detailing. Exner’s signature styling elements, such as the deeply rolling sills and the subtle upswept swage line on the quarter panel, lent it a futuristic yet timeless allure. The cockpit, reminiscent of the Jet Age, exuded Italian suave, adorned with luxurious appointments that rivalled the best of British craftsmanship. Underneath its stylish exterior, the L6.4 boasted MoPar running gear, anchored by the formidable 383 cubic inch “Wedge” V8 engine paired with a robust TorqueFlite automatic transmission. With 335 horsepower at its command, the L6.4 was a formidable machine, capable of conquering continents with ease. Despite its staggering price tag of $13,500 US, the L6.4 found favor among discerning clientele, including luminaries like Frank Sinatra, Lucille Ball, and Dean Martin, who appreciated its blend of luxury and performance. However, the L6.4’s limited production of just 26 examples was not due to its exorbitant price but rather the complexities of production and distribution between Italy and the United States. In the end, the Dual-Ghia L6.4 Coupé enjoyed a brief yet glamorous existence, leaving an indelible mark on automotive history as a symbol of opulence and innovation.
