01 / THE STORY
History & context
The Siata Daina Gran Sport Coupé by Stabilimenti Farina was a limited-production, fixed-roof sports car built between 1952 and 1953. Based on the Siata-modified Fiat 1400 chassis, the model exemplifies the transitional period in early postwar Italian automotive design, where specialist manufacturers collaborated with coachbuilders to produce performance-oriented grand touring vehicles in very small numbers. The Gran Sport Coupé was developed in parallel with the more numerous Spider variants but offered a closed-body alternative with similar mechanical configuration and refined aesthetics. The chassis retained Fiat’s original steel monocoque platform, shortened and reinforced by Siata to improve rigidity and handling characteristics. Power was derived from a Siata-tuned version of the Fiat inline-four engine. In most Gran Sport Coupés, engine displacement was either 1,500 cc or 1,817 cc, with modifications including higher compression, performance camshaft profiles, and upgraded carburetion. Depending on specification, power output ranged between 65 and 90 horsepower. The engine was paired with a four-speed manual gearbox, and power was sent to the rear wheels. Suspension was independent at the front, employing double wishbones, and coil-sprung at the rear via a live axle. Drum brakes were fitted at all four corners. The coachwork, executed by Stabilimenti Farina of Turin, was constructed from steel with some aluminium elements, notably in the bonnet and rear deck. The two-seat body featured a low-profile fastback design, smooth contours, and restrained decorative trim. The front grille was modest in scale and integrated into a gently rounded front fascia. The cabin offered limited luggage space, racing-style bucket seats, and a minimal but functional instrument cluster. Fewer than four examples of the Daina Gran Sport Coupé by Stabilimenti Farina are believed to have been produced, making it one of the rarest derivatives of the Daina platform. Unlike the more visible Spider variants, the Coupés saw limited competition use and were typically reserved for private clients with an interest in high-speed touring. Due to its scarcity, bespoke construction, and role in Siata’s limited production history, the Gran Sport Coupé by Stabilimenti Farina remains a highly significant but seldom-seen example of early 1950s Italian coachbuilt sports car development.
