01 / THE STORY
History & context
The Chery A3 is a compact car produced by the Chinese automaker Chery between 2008 and 2015. It was offered in two body styles: a 4-door sedan (A3) and a 5-door hatchback (J3). The model made its debut as a concept car at the 2006 Beijing Motor Show, where it attracted attention for its contemporary design. Following the concept’s positive reception, the production version was introduced two years later, going on sale in September 2008. One of the standout features of the Chery A3 was its design, which was the result of a collaboration with the renowned Italian design studio Pininfarina. Pininfarina’s involvement gave the A3 a sleek and stylish appearance, marked by clean lines and a modern, aerodynamic profile. This design helped set the A3 apart in the competitive compact car segment, making it more visually appealing compared to other offerings in its class. The Chery A3 was equipped with a variety of engine options, including 1.5-liter and 1.6-liter gasoline engines, delivering a balance of performance and fuel efficiency. These engines were paired with either a manual or automatic transmission, catering to different driving preferences and market demands. The car was designed to be an affordable yet modern option, making it a practical choice for budget-conscious consumers looking for a stylish compact vehicle. Throughout its production, the Chery A3 received recognition for its combination of affordability, design, and practicality. The collaboration with Pininfarina helped elevate the car’s image and showcased the growing capabilities of Chinese automakers in partnering with international design firms. Although production ended in 2015, the Chery A3 remains an important model in Chery’s history, marking a significant step in the company’s efforts to compete in the global automotive market.
