01 / THE STORY

History & context

The Chery J3 is a compact car that was produced by the Chinese automaker Chery between 2008 and 2015. It was available in two body styles: a 4-door sedan, known as the A3, and a 5-door hatchback, designated as the J3. The model was first revealed as a concept car at the 2006 Beijing Motor Show, where it garnered attention for its modern design. The production version of the Chery J3 debuted two years later, going on sale in September 2008. One of the key features of the Chery J3 was its design, which was created by the renowned Italian design studio Pininfarina. This collaboration gave the J3 a sleek and stylish appearance, setting it apart from many other cars in its class. The car’s exterior was characterized by smooth lines and a modern, dynamic profile, reflecting the influence of Pininfarina’s signature design language. Under the hood, the Chery J3 was equipped with a range of engine options, including 1.5-liter and 1.6-liter gasoline engines, which offered a balance of power and fuel efficiency. The vehicle was designed to be practical and affordable, making it an appealing choice for buyers in markets looking for a budget-friendly compact car with modern features. Throughout its production run, the Chery J3 was well received for its stylish design and competitive pricing. It served as an important model for Chery, helping to establish the brand’s presence in the global automotive market. Although production of the Chery J3 ended in 2015, the car remains a noteworthy example of Chinese automotive design, showcasing the potential for collaboration between Chinese manufacturers and international design firms like Pininfarina.
