01 / THE STORY

History & context

The Bizzarrini 5300 Aperta Lusso is a limited-production open grand tourer developed by the revived Bizzarrini marque. It is based on an unrealised concept drawn in the early 1960s by Giorgetto Giugiaro, then working at Bertone, for Giotto Bizzarrini. The design proposed an open version of the 5300 GT with a structural roll-over arch and removable roof panels, anticipating the later targa-roof concept. The original project was not produced during the 1960s. Bizzarrini’s limited resources were concentrated on competition, including the 5300 GT Corsa, which achieved class victory at the 1965 24 Hours of Le Mans. The open version therefore remained in the archives until the modern relaunch of the company. The 5300 Aperta Lusso represents the first all-new production Bizzarrini since the original 5300 GT. It follows the 5300 GT Corsa Revival and precedes the future Giotto Hyper GT, forming part of the brand’s return to limited-series coachbuilt cars. The new car was developed from the original Giugiaro concept by the Giugiaro design centre, using modern materials while preserving the visual language of the 1960s. The body is made from carbon-fibre composite and reinforced by a central structure in aerospace-grade steel. The design keeps the wide-body proportions of the 5300 GT Corsa, with an open roof, removable panels and a fixed structural arch. Power comes from a naturally aspirated 5.3-litre V8, mounted in a front-mid position and producing more than 400 hp. It is paired with a five-speed Tremec manual gearbox. Maximum speed is quoted at over 280 km/h. The suspension uses double wishbones on both axles. The car also retains inboard rear disc brakes and no brake servo, giving a more direct mechanical response. Magnesium Campagnolo centre-lock wheels are fitted with specially developed Pirelli tyres. The first commission is named La Dolce Vita and is finished in Azzurro Gaia. Production is initially limited to ten examples, each built to individual client specification.
