01 / THE STORY

History & context

The Alfa Romeo 6C 2500 Sport Ghia Cabriolet designed by Mario Boano and built in a limited series by Carrozzeria Ghia is a rare and exquisite piece of automotive history. Mario Felice Boano, then working at Ghia, contributed to several iconic designs including the Volkswagen Karmann Ghia and the Lancia Aurelia GT, alongside this impressive Alfa Romeo. At first glance, the front of the Alfa Romeo 6C 2500 Sport Cabriolet challenges expectations, with design elements that may not immediately suggest it as an Alfa Romeo. The handmade glass headlight covers are seamlessly integrated into the aluminium body, showcasing meticulous craftsmanship and attention to detail. Notably absent is the characteristic Alfa Romeo radiator grille, replaced instead by small air intake openings that impart a surprisingly modern appearance for a car produced in the post-war era. Vintage features such as the “trafficators” in the side screens remind us of its era, while the beautifully integrated bumpers exemplify both aesthetic appeal and functional design. The absence of rubber separations between the bumpers and the body underscores the superior design and restoration efforts that have preserved this car over time. The side profile of the car reflects the elegant lines typical of luxury cars from the 1940s, reaffirming its status as one of the most expensive cars available in Italy during its time. Subtle badging indicates Ghia’s involvement in shaping the distinctive lines and intricate details of the Alfa Romeo 6C 2500 Sport Cabriolet. Moving to the rear, the faired-in tail lights are a striking feature, further enhancing its allure for enthusiasts of classic automobiles. Whether admiring its exterior beauty or experiencing the interior ambiance while driving, the Alfa Romeo captivates with its pearl grey body and meticulously crafted red leather seats. Inside, a large steering wheel complements the dashboard adorned with chrome details, knobs, and elegantly styled gauges. Beyond its aesthetic appeal, the Alfa Romeo 6C 2500 Sport Ghia Cabriolet boasts a rich history, highlighted by its recognition at the Villa d’Este Concours in 2012, where it won the prestigious Gentleman’s Sports Cars category. Only two examples of this model are known to exist today—one in Europe and another in Japan—underscoring its rarity and significance within automotive heritage. The loss of the other two cars despite their unique heritage adds an element of surprise and lament to the story of this remarkable vehicle, emphasizing the importance of preservation and appreciation for such automotive masterpieces.

Family-level migration is safe: published histories describe four 1947 Ghia special Cabriolets. Exact chassis currently materialized are 915.340, 915.358 and 915.658; the fourth remains unidentified. Chassis 915.658 retains its Ghia-vs-Touring body-identity conflict and is not silently harmonized.
