01 / THE STORY

History & context

The Alfa Romeo 6C 2500 S Coupé Victoria, constructed in 1947, is a one-off example of postwar Italian coachbuilding. The body was executed by Stabilimenti Farina and is attributed to Giovanni Michelotti, at the time a young designer employed by the Turin-based carrozzeria. The vehicle was based on the Alfa Romeo 6C 2500 Sport chassis, a model known for its balance of performance and refinement. The 6C 2500 Sport was powered by a 2,443 cc inline six-cylinder engine, equipped with dual carburetors in this configuration. The engine produced approximately 95 horsepower and was paired with a four-speed manual transmission. The chassis employed a cruciform frame, independent front suspension with wishbones and coil springs, and a solid rear axle with semi-elliptical leaf springs. Braking was managed by hydraulically operated drum brakes on all four wheels. The Victoria Coupé’s design is characterized by restrained proportions and a fastback silhouette. The styling demonstrates a departure from prewar motifs, with an emphasis on volume integration and continuous surfaces. The roofline is elongated and flows into a modestly sloped rear, while the front retains a vertical grille flanked by integrated headlamps. The greenhouse is balanced and features narrow pillars, allowing for increased visibility. The overall effect is one of understated elegance, aligned with early postwar trends in European grand touring design. The car was presented at the 1947 Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este. Its presence there underscores its intended function as a showcase of craftsmanship and design. Stabilimenti Farina, one of the most prolific Italian coachbuilders of the period, used this body style to highlight its technical and stylistic capabilities in the immediate postwar years. Only one example of the Coupé Victoria was produced. No further variants are recorded. While chassis and ownership history remains largely undocumented in public records, the vehicle occupies a notable place in the chronology of Alfa Romeo’s coachbuilt lineage. Its singularity, combined with its connection to Giovanni Michelotti’s early career, contributes to its historical and design significance.
