01 / THE STORY

History & context

The Alfa Romeo 1900C Super Sprint is a shining example of Italian automotive craftsmanship, blending performance with elegant design. In early 1955, Carrozzeria Touring, one of Italy’s most esteemed coachbuilders, set out to create a fresh, modern take on the 1900C Super Sprint. Their efforts resulted in two stunning prototypes: a Coupé and a Spider, collectively known as the SS Tipo 55 “Ginevra.” These designs were ambitious and forward-thinking, showcasing Touring’s knack for innovation. However, Alfa Romeo ultimately declined them, officially citing high production costs. Unofficially, it’s believed the designs strayed too far from Alfa Romeo’s established aesthetic values of the time. While this was a setback, it only motivated Touring to deliver one final masterpiece. Federico Formenti, Touring’s talented designer, led the creation of a new design that aligned with Alfa Romeo’s stylistic guidelines. The result was the Alfa Romeo 1900C Super Sprint II Serie, a car that exuded grace and sophistication. Its sleek, flowing lines and well-proportioned silhouette made it a standout in its era. Despite its refined beauty, the car earned the nickname “Giuliettona” due to its resemblance to Alfa’s smaller Giulietta Spider, introduced around the same time. Underneath its stunning exterior, the 1900C Super Sprint II Serie maintained Alfa Romeo’s reputation for spirited performance. Powered by a responsive inline-four engine and built with Touring’s lightweight construction techniques, the car delivered both style and substance. Produced for just two years before being replaced by the Alfa Romeo 2000 Spider Touring, the 1900C Super Sprint II Serie remains a cherished piece of automotive history. It represents a unique moment when innovation and tradition came together, resulting in a car that still captures the imagination of enthusiasts and collectors today. Friendly yet undeniably sophisticated, the 1900C Super Sprint II Serie is a testament to Alfa Romeo and Touring’s shared commitment to excellence.

Production notes
Family chronology normalized: the Touring-bodied Alfa Romeo 1900C Super Sprint evolution is documented from 1954. Torino 1954 evidence is family-level and preserves four separate physical display observations (#38, #49, #105, #110); exact chassis remain open. Later 1955-1958 production figures/specification references are retained as later-series context and must not erase the 1954 show phase.

Official Stellantis Heritage documents the 1954 Super Sprint evolution with 1,975 cc and 115 CV and Touring coachwork. Later Museo Alfa Romeo 1955-1958 specification/production data describe the subsequent series and are not used to redatethe family start. | AMS Heft 6/1956 contemporaneously documents the revised Touring aluminium Super Sprint at Geneva, available as two-seater or with two occasional seats; it notes larger glazing/lower bonnet and slightly lower engine/radiator placement. These are configuration details, not a replacement for the official mechanical baseline.
