Italdesign Unveils Design of Indonesia’s First Indigenous Passenger Vehicle

July 23, 2025

Indonesian electric SUV

Moncalieri, July 23, 2025 – Italdesign has been commissioned by the Indonesian government to design the country’s first-ever national passenger vehicle, marking a historic milestone in the nation’s industrial and cultural evolution. The project, known as Indigenous Indonesian Car (i2C), will make its world debut at the GAIKINDO Indonesia International Auto Show (GIIAS) from July 24 to August 3, 2025, at Stand SN2.

A National Symbol on Four Wheels

The i2C is more than a vehicle — it is a strategic project designed to be a cultural and historical ambassador for Indonesia. It combines strong visual identity with cutting-edge electric technology and sustainability. Italdesign was chosen as a strategic partner to shape the design concept of this landmark initiative, which aims to become a unifying symbol for the nation’s multicultural identity.

The bold, sculpted SUV concept offers 6 to 7 seats and is based on an existing full-electric platform. The exterior is rugged and distinctive, with adventurous proportions and a strong presence. Inside, the cabin draws inspiration from Indonesian heritage, fusing modern design with traditional elements in a refined and contemporary aesthetic.

Design Rooted in Culture

Italdesign collaborated with Indonesian engineers to develop a vehicle that pays homage to national symbols and artistic traditions. Iconic elements like the Garuda—a symbol of power, wisdom, and sovereignty—and intricate batik patterns representing regional artistry, have been seamlessly integrated into the vehicle’s design, creating a unique and emotionally resonant identity.

The exterior styling emphasizes solidity and elegance, with clean surfaces and dynamic lines, while the interior focuses on functionality and premium touches, ensuring a comfortable and elevated user experience.

A Strategic Vision for Indonesia’s Future

In a market currently dominated by global automotive giants such as Toyota, Honda, Mitsubishi, and BYD, the i2C project represents Indonesia’s strategic move toward industrial localization and automotive independence. The vehicle is initially intended for government use, with future plans to expand into broader commercial production.

According to Andrea Porta, Business Developer at Italdesign:

“Our company plays a pivotal role in strategic, high-value projects that have proven to be milestones for brands and governments alike. The i2C project is no exception, and we’re proud to be part of a long-term vision for Indonesia’s industrial future.”

Harsusanto, President of PT TMI — the Indonesian firm coordinating the project — added:

“This collaboration is an important step in demonstrating our automotive development capabilities and translating President Prabowo’s vision for the future of mobility into reality.”

TMI has announced that a production-ready version of the i2C concept will be unveiled at next year’s auto show, following additional phases of refinement and evaluation.
