01 / THE STORY

History & context

The Alfa Romeo 8C 2900 emerged in 1936 as a defining achievement in the pre-war automotive world. Born from the same spirit that shaped the victorious 8C 35 Grand Prix car, it was conceived not merely as a road vehicle but as a grand tourer infused with the soul of a thoroughbred racer. Every element of its design reflected this duality—technical precision seamlessly married to timeless elegance. Its heart was a supercharged 2.9-litre inline-eight engine, composed of two four-cylinder blocks with a central power take-off. Twin overhead camshafts per bank allowed for exceptional breathing at high speeds, while the Roots-type supercharger elevated performance to a realm few others could touch, delivering between 180 and 220 horsepower depending on specification. Top speeds in excess of 220 km/h were not merely theoretical—they were achieved on open roads and racing circuits alike. Vittorio Jano, the engineer behind its conception, sought balance as well as power. He employed a transaxle layout, placing the gearbox on the rear axle to optimize weight distribution. The result was a car that not only accelerated with authority but also handled with a grace and stability that were almost uncanny for its time. A mere forty examples were built, each one unique. Most were bodied by Carrozzeria Touring, utilizing the revolutionary superleggera technique—a framework of lightweight tubing over which thin aluminium panels were stretched. A handful were crafted by Pinin Farina or Castagna, offering subtle variations on an already striking form. The Alfa Romeo 8C 2900B Spider Touring was not content to rest on its aesthetic laurels. It triumphed in competition, claiming victories at the Mille Miglia in 1938 and 1947. One such car, driven by Carlo Pintacuda, famously finished second after a heroic drive despite mechanical setbacks. Post-war, the car continued its journey, passing through the hands of prominent figures like Tommy Lee and Phil Hill before finding its way into Ralph Lauren’s esteemed collection. Restored with great care to its original specification, it continues to appear at the world’s most prestigious heritage events—a reminder that true greatness does not fade with time, but only grows more luminous.
