01 / THE STORY

History & context

The Ford Mustang Shelby Zagato was the milan coachbuilder’s own version of the Ford Shelby 350 GT and was unveiled at the 1967 Turin Auto Show; various changes, in different points of the bodywork. In the front, the air intake has been lowered and the lights changed; the roof has a new rear window and the rear of the car has been modified. It was intended to be produced by Zagato in small series with an increase of L. 400,000 on the list price of the car. The Ford Mustang Zagato chassis No. 7T02A201813 rolled off the assembly line at the New Jersey plant on Feb. 21, 1967, before being shipped to Italy. In the spring, the car arrived at Zagato. First registered in June, it is completed in the fall. Modifications mainly concern the exterior where the color scheme changes from white to green, Carello square headlights are adopted and a fake air intake is added on the hood. Inside, the seats receive white leatherette whites. The Mustang is retired by the first owner who drives 46,000 km until January 1983, when it is locked in a shed. In 1995 it is bought by the current owner’s father and restored keeping the modifications even though no one had any information about the car. In 2018 a photo of the Mustang in front of the factory was found in the Zagato archives, irrefutable proof of the car’s authorship. In 2019 the car is repainted in the green it had when it was delivered to the customer, and it is certified by Zagato. It possesses Zagato, ASI and FIVA certification. Car in perfect mechanical, body and interior condition. The car was the subject of articles in the magazines “Autoitaliana” in the Fall 2020 issue and “Octane” in the December 2020 issue. It participated in the Mille Miglia Experience 2021.
