01 / THE STORY
History & context
The Fiat 500 Topolino Panoramica was developed by Zagato beginning in 1947 on the Fiat 500 B chassis, later extended to other Topolino variants until 1950. Zagato applied aviation-derived construction ideas to the small Fiat platform, introducing a greenhouse with enlarged transparent areas and curved surfaces that approximated aircraft cockpit visibility. The term “Panoramica” referred to the expanded field of view made possible by the material choices and window geometry. Engineer Fabio Luigi Rapi, working with Zagato, incorporated Plexiglas into the upper windshield, rear, and side glazing. The use of this material allowed complex curvature and reduced weight relative to conventional automotive glass of the period. The interior benefited from increased light and outward visibility, creating a brighter cabin than the standard Topolino saloon. Body construction employed Zagato’s lightweight practices, with attention to aerodynamic surface development and integrated roof glazing. The Panoramica retained the standard Fiat mechanical layout and compact dimensions while altering the external form through enlarged greenhouse treatment, revised door profiles, and continuous roof curvature. Production was limited, with approximately 100 units manufactured across the Panoramica series between 1947 and 1950. Contemporary patents registered by Zagato covered the glazing concept and associated construction method. This particular example received category prizes at the 1950 Concours d’Elegance held at Rome (Pincio) and Venice, documented in period concours records. The Panoramica concept represented one of the earliest systematic automotive applications of Plexiglas and provided a reference for later lightweight glazing studies in postwar Italian coachbuilding.
