01 / THE STORY
History & context
The Siata 1100 Viotti Berlinetta (1938) was a competition-oriented sports car developed by SIATA using Fiat mechanical components and clothed in bespoke closed berlinetta coachwork by Carrozzeria Viotti. It represents a clear example of late-1930s Italian sports-car practice, when specialist firms transformed standard production platforms into capable endurance and road-racing machines. The car was based on the Fiat 1100 chassis, retaining the basic layout of a front-mounted inline four-cylinder engine driving the rear wheels through a four-speed manual gearbox. SIATA extensively reworked the mechanicals to meet sporting requirements, revising carburation, compression, and ancillary components to improve both performance and reliability. Suspension followed contemporary Fiat practice, with independent front suspension and a live rear axle, while braking and gearing were optimized for long-distance competition. Weight reduction and aerodynamic efficiency were addressed primarily through the bodywork. Viotti’s berlinetta featured a compact enclosed form with integrated fenders, a rounded nose, and a tapered tail, reflecting aerodynamic research influenced by endurance racing. Steel panels were hand-formed over a lightweight internal structure, emphasizing rigidity and reduced frontal area. The low roofline and curved glazing distinguished the berlinetta from open sports variants, offering improved high-speed stability and weather protection during long events. The design of the body is attributed to Mario Revelli di Beaumont, whose refined sense of proportion and functional elegance is evident in the smooth surfaces and balanced volumes of the car. His approach combined aesthetic restraint with practical aerodynamic considerations, aligning perfectly with the car’s competitive intent. One example was entered in the 1938 Mille Miglia, photographed near Bologna with Vittorio Mussolini alongside Orlando Piperno. Another Siata 1100 Viotti Berlinetta of the same specification competed in 1940 with race number 49, driven by Donati and Massimiani, demonstrating the model’s continued relevance in Italian road racing prior to wartime interruption. Production was extremely limited. Four identical examples are documented, all sharing the same mechanical configuration and coachwork concept, making the Siata 1100 Viotti Berlinetta a rare and historically significant synthesis of Fiat engineering, SIATA tuning, and Viotti-Revelli design.
