01 / THE STORY
History & context
The Fiat 600 Giardinetta Viotti, a prototype introduced at the 1959 Turin Motor Show, represents a bold step forward in automotive design during the late 1950s. Designed by Pietro Frua for the prestigious coachbuilder Viotti, this groundbreaking vehicle showcased a revolutionary design that challenged the norms of its time. Built on the reliable Fiat 600 chassis, the Giardinetta Viotti featured a design concept that was ahead of its era, reminiscent of the “linea tese” design philosophy popularized by Rodolfo Bonetto, known for his work with Carrozzeria Boneschi. By embracing Bonetto’s visionary approach to form and proportion, Carrozzeria Viotti aimed to push the boundaries of conventional automotive styling. This collaboration with Pietro Frua marked a strategic move by Carrozzeria Viotti to reclaim its heritage as an innovative coachbuilder. In 1961, the company further showcased its commitment to innovation of the Linea Tesa design language with the unveiling of the Fiat 1500 Coupé, designed by Bonetto himself. This initiative reflected Viotti’s legacy of pioneering design, which had been established in the 1920s and 1930s under the creative direction of Mario Revelli di Beaumont. With these innovative designs, Carrozzeria Viotti solidified its status as a pioneer in automotive design, seamlessly blending tradition with innovation. The Fiat 600 Giardinetta Viotti stand as enduring symbols of creativity and ingenuity, shaping the course of automotive history with their distinctive presence.
