01 / THE STORY

History & context

The Triumph TR3 Special, commonly referred to as the TR3 Dream Car, was a one-off prototype developed in 1956–1957 as part of an exploratory styling exercise connected to the restyling of the Triumph TR3. The project originated outside Standard-Triumph and was initiated by Raymond Flower, who approached the company seeking mechanical components for an unrelated small-car programme. During discussions with Harry Webster, Triumph’s technical director, Flower stated that a complete prototype could be produced within three months. Webster proposed a conditional agreement: if Flower could deliver a convincing sports car prototype within that timeframe, Standard-Triumph would fund the project. Ten days later, Flower returned to Coventry with a set of design sketches produced by Giovanni Michelotti. Webster and Martin Tustin selected one proposal, and a production TR3 chassis was removed from the assembly line and supplied to Flower. The contract value was set at £3,000. The prototype was completed within the agreed three-month period and delivered to Coventry on a transporter. The car was bodied by Carrozzeria Vignale in Turin, a fact immediately noted by Webster upon inspection, although Michelotti’s authorship was not initially disclosed, as he was working anonymously for multiple coachbuilders at the time. Mechanically, the car retained the standard TR3 layout, with no recorded alterations to the chassis, drivetrain or suspension. The project was focused exclusively on exterior and interior styling. The TR3 Dream Car featured a completely new body with proportions and surfacing distinct from the production TR3. The design was more streamlined and contemporary, with smoother volumes and a reduced visual mass. The car was conceived as a styling proposal rather than a production-ready prototype and was never engineered for series manufacture. Following the prototype’s completion, Alick Dick requested a meeting with the designer. This took place at the 1957 Geneva Motor Show, where Standard-Triumph and Michelotti signed an exclusive design contract for the UK market. The TR3 Dream Car thus served as the direct catalyst for Michelotti’s long-term involvement with Triumph. After a period in the United Kingdom, the prototype was returned to Turin. No further development of the TR3 Special was undertaken. Its primary significance lies in its role as the introduction of Michelotti to Triumph and as a decisive influence on subsequent projects, including the Herald and the later TR4, rather than as a precursor to a specific production model.
